During the Hungarian revolution of 1956, it was here, outside parliament, that thousands of student protestors gathered, and were fired upon by state security police - in the entrances to the buildings on the far right of this photo, there are permanent metal studs fitted into the walls where bullet holes were found, as a memorial to those killed.
